My sister and I are working on qayg square blocks and this project is turning out heavier than expected. We repurposed a few old denim shirts instead of quilting cotton which felt like a genius idea until we realized we might be making a weighted blanket by accident 🤪
Has anyone else experimented with heavier fabrics and noticed a big shift in weight?

Oh yeah, denim can definitely add some serious heft to a quilt! I've only used it for a small project and I was already surprised by the weight difference! Is it too late to alternate it with a lighter fabric? Just trying to think of a workaround for you, but honestly, it's great that you're repurposing denim!

@LaraQuilts
Tell me about it. This thing's gonna weigh a ton at this rate. It feels like we're building a fort instead of a quilt! We've already cut all the denim squares so swapping in lighter fabric now would be a whole 'nother can of worms. Maybe we just embrace the accidental weighted blanket vibe? 🤔

Love this! I say embrace the weighted blanket vibes, it'll be cozy and unique. I've used flannel before and noticed the weight jump too. Are you planning to back it with something lighter or stick with denim all the way?

Haha, why not embrace it? A denim quilt that doubles as a fort and a weighted blanket actually sounds pretty cool! I'm sure it'll be super cozy

Wanted to post a quick update on the project my sister and I started. We leaned into the weighted blanket idea and the quilt top is now complete but the final finishing is a real workout. It's a labor of love that will probably outlast the house itself. 😄
