Applique tip & tricks for a total beginner

I was given some applique patterns but need a good tutorial to really learn how to do it, since the instructions weren't very clear. I have some fusible interfacing, but its not paper backed, just wondering when that type is needed. Any help?

fusible interfacing, if it's not paper backed, you're likely working with the kind that's meant to add stability rather than act as a fusible web for raw edge appliqué, the paper backed stuff like HeatnBond Lite or Wonder Under is usually what people use when they want to trace and fuse shapes onto fabric before stitching.
Though you can still do appliqué without paper backing, you'll just need to cut your shapes carefully and maybe use a fabric glue stick or pins to hold them in place before stitching but raw edge will definitely shift
